Expanding educational opportunities for veterans, a key goal of the University System of Ohio Strategic Plan, got a major boost in July when Governor Ted Strickland signed an executive order creating the Ohio GI Promise, which guarantees in-state tuition rates at Ohio colleges and universities to all eligible veterans and their families, no matter where they are from.

"The transition from military to civilian life poses significant challenges for our nation's veterans and their families. But making that transition successfully is critical to the future of those who have served."
— Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut.

In line with the initiative, the State of Ohio will host a one-day conference in Columbus on Nov. 12 for college and university personnel who work with veterans who are students on University System of Ohio campuses across the state.

Ohio's Campus Services for Veterans Conference brings together officials from across the System to examine best practices for providing services to veterans and their families. It is open to all campus personnel who interact with veterans, including veterans services professionals, guidance counselors, admissions and marketing staff, administrative personnel, and others. Though conference sessions aren't directly targeted at professors, teaching faculty will benefit by learning more about the veterans who are students in their classrooms. Also attending will be representatives of the U.S. Military, the National Guard, the American Council on Education, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and other local and regional veterans' organizations.

"The transition from military to civilian life poses significant challenges for our nation's veterans and their families. But making that transition successfully is critical to the future of those who have served," said Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut. "As part of the Ohio GI Promise, it's our goal to make Ohio's University System the most veteran-friendly in the country. In addition to tuition benefits, we want to provide System-wide campus services that help vets with this transition and whatever else they need to freely pursue their education on University System of Ohio campuses."

In addition to sharing best practices on campuses, conference topics include:

The program is availabe to the public and materials are free for all attendees, with lunch available at a nominal fee for those attendees who pre-order.
