Download Ohio GI Bill Overview
The Ohio GI Promise was created by Gov. Ted Strickland by Executive Order 2008-17S on July 8, 2008. Together with the creation of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services on May 23, 2008 and the signing of the Post 9-11 GI Bill on June 30, 2008, it represented the most significant expansion of benefits and services for veterans in Ohio since the end of the Second World War. Today, the Board of Regents and the University System of Ohio are working with stakeholders across the state to ensure that veterans in Ohio are given every opportunity to achieve the promise of a higher education.
The Ohio GI Promise is not any one event or benefit, but rather a collaboration of many actors; the Board of Regents, Ohio's institutions of higher education, the Department of Veterans Services, and many others, that all seek to encourage America's veterans and their dependents to earn their college degrees here in Ohio and ensure that they have the resources they need to succeed. In doing so, veterans and their families will make significant and important contributions to the state of Ohio in many ways: They will help expand Ohio's skilled work force with their knowledge and professionalism; they will bring their maturity and motivation to Ohio's higher education classrooms; and they will enrich Ohio's communities through their leadership, selfless-service, and dedication.
The Board of Regents, through the leadership of Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut, has made fulfilling the Ohio GI Promise a top priority for the University System of Ohio. Indeed, veterans and their dependents are seen as a key component of the chancellor's Strategic Plan for Higher Education 2008-2017. To be successful it will be important to communicate with veterans and their families and connect them to all the resources that have been made available to them.
