Biomedicine and Health Care - Centers of Excellence

Biomedicines and Healthcare-Centers of ExcellenceOhio has a strong history of innovation and a second-to-none network of clinical institutions. With an emphasis on research, development and marketing of pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, bioinformatics, medical devices, medical equipment and other health-related products, Ohio is developing the technologies that are growing an industry while also improving the lives of Ohioans.

With more than $2.5 billion in funding and over 1,140 bioscience entities in operation throughout the state, including the headquarters to two Fortune 500 companies – Cardinal Health and Procter & Gamble, Ohio is establishing an international leadership role in the cutting-edge biomedical and healthcare industry. Between January 2002 and June 2008, over $400 million of Ohio's $1.6 billion Third Frontier funds had been competitively awarded to support bioscience-related development and commercialization initiatives. Since 2002 more than 90 diverse biomedical projects have been funded by Ohio's Third Frontier, epitomizing the breadth and depth of the state's bioscience-based economic development.

Ohio's superior medical system also helps explain the state's emerging dominance in the biomedical and healthcare fi eld. In U.S. News & World Report's 2008 "America's Best Hospitals" list, 14 Ohio hospitals were ranked among the nation's top 220 hospitals in a variety of specialties, ranking Ohio among the top 5 states. Of those Ohio hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic's Heart Center was named the best in the nation for cardiac care – a title it has held for 14 years in a row. The 2008 U.S. News & World Report "America's Best Children's Hospitals" rankings show that 4 of the top 15 pediatric hospitals are in Ohio—Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (3rd), University Hospital's Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland (5th), Children's Hospital Cleveland Clinic (14th) and Nationwide Children's in Columbus (15th). Due in part to its strong clinical network and medical reputation, Ohio hosted 16 percent of all clinical trials conducted in the U.S.

Ohio's Centers of Excellence in Biomedicine and Healthcare are located at 14 universities throughout the state. Twelve of these institutions are part of the University System of Ohio, the largest comprehensive public system of higher education in the nation. Two are the nation's top ranked independent research institutions.
