Governor Strickland declares February 2008 “Financial Aid Awareness Month” in support of College Goal Sunday
For Immediate Release, January 22, 2008
COLUMBUS—Governor Strickland has declared February 2008 as “Financial Aid Awareness” month in conjunction with the Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut’s endorsement of the annual College Goal Sunday event in Ohio. Coordinated by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA), in collaboration with the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio College Access Network’s KnowHow2Go campaign, this event offers Ohio families free assistance with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This year, college financial aid administrators and high school guidance counselors will volunteer their assistance at 38 locations in 33 counties around the state on February 10, 2008 at 2pm.
“The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators’ annual College Goal Sunday event has provided over 10,000 Ohioans with assistance to overcome fiscal barriers to gain access to a higher education, and I extol their dedicated efforts,” Strickland said. “I would like to recognize February as Financial Aid Awareness Month to help promote the availability of aid to qualified students and to increase the familiarity of financial aid to those who seek post‐secondary education.”
“The future success of our young people depends on the availability of quality, accessible educational opportunities, and the devoted work that student financial aid administrators put forth on a daily basis ensures that countless prospective students can attain funding that meet their fiscal needs,” said Fingerhut. “OASFAA is ecstatic to have Governor Strickland’s and Chancellor Fingerhut’s support,” said Greg Guzman, OASFAA Chair of College Goal Sunday and Director of Student Financial Aid at Bowling Green State University. “Working collaboratively to inform and assist Ohioans with options for paying for college is an essential piece of overcoming financial barriers typical of many first‐generation, low‐income students. “ For more information about College Goal Sunday in Ohio, visit http://www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org/ or call the Ohio College Access Information Hotline at 1‐877‐I‐ATTAIN (428‐8246).
