Ohio State Reaffirms Tuition Freeze
July 14 – The Ohio State University today announced that it does not plan to raise tuition for resident undergraduate students for the 2009-2010 academic year despite recent state budget revisions.

Colleges Focus on Veterans as GI Bill Ups Numbers
July 6 – Veterans have benefited this past school year from a program at Cleveland State started in 2007 by chemistry professor John Schupp to form some freshman-level classes with all veterans. The University of Arizona adopted his program last year and schools in at least a dozen states are working on programs modeled on Cleveland State.
State-created info tech center at WSU becomes self-sustaining
July 1 – An $11 million, multi-year technology grant that Ohio authorized in 2003 to create daytaOhio, a Wright Center for information technology located at Wright State University, expires when the state fiscal year ends Tuesday, June 30. But daytaOhio is here for the long term.

June 13 – Hundreds of college students in Ohio will have a shot at paid internships next year in technology, bioscience and other fields through the Ohio Third Frontier Commission.
Sinclair Gets $1M in 'Green' Tech Grants
June 9 – Sinclair Community College has won two grants totaling more than $1 million to develop programs in the expanding "green" areas of automotive hybrid technology and aviation diesel engine technology.

March 27 – The governor, chancellor, and Ohio General Assembly honored the University System of Ohio's first group of "Faculty Innovator Awardees," for their outstanding digital course materials that enrich learning and save students money on textbook costs.

March 18 – Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut requests proposals for the Ohio Cooperative Education and Internship Program, an initiative designed to attract and retain Ohio's top talent.
State Aligning Colleges, Hot Jobs
March 17 – There are jobs out there, and the state's colleges and businesses have teamed up to make sure Ohioans can qualify for them. Through the Ohio Skills Bank, teams of educators and employers are working in each of 12 economic-development regions to determine the hot jobs of today and tomorrow.

WSU Officials Forgo Raises, Announce Student Fund
March 2 – Wright State's vice presidents and deans have agreed to forgo raises this year and asked that the savings be used for financial relief for students.
Ohio University Students Thank Gov. for Freezing Tuition
Feb. 25 – The correspondence is designed to draw attention to a recent Ohio University Student Senate resolution commending Strickland for making higher education a priority despite the poor economy and the difficult decisions it prompts for state officials.
Choose Ohio First Scholars Honored
Feb. 24 – Nearly 200 scholars and faculty mentors will be saluted today by family members, college and university educators, state officials and business leaders at a Statehouse reception honoring Ohio's first class of Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program participants.

Feb. 11 – University of Cincinnati President Nancy L. Zimpher has announced her departure to assume the position of chancellor of the State University of New York.
Gee's Call for "Reinvention" of Higher Ed
Feb. 9 – Gordon Gee, The Ohio State University president, feels that instead of simply trying to restore lost funds, colleges and universities need to "reconfigure ourselves." Specifically, Gee suggested that colleges abandon their traditional devotion to disciplines, rethink the way faculty members are hired, and embrace a more central role for community colleges in higher education.

Sept. 29–As part of the Ohio GI Promise, the University System of Ohio vows to make its campuses the most veteran-friendly in the country. The conference allows campus personnel to explore best practices.
University System of Ohio Joins International Group
Sept. 24–The University System of Ohio announced a partnership with The International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate), a UK-based organization focused on creating higher education measurements. The University System of Ohio is the first higher education system in the United States to work with i-graduate by adopting the International Student Barometer. This leading international student satisfaction survey will measure the services provided at Ohio campuses and compare them to key competitors in the United States and abroad.
Ohio Becomes First State to Offer In-State Tuition to All GI Bill Participants
July 8–Ohio Governor Ted Strickland signed an executive order establishing The Ohio GI Promise, which changes Ohio's residence requirements to allow all veterans of the U.S. Armed Services, their spouses, and dependents who choose to attend Ohio colleges and universities to do so at in-state tuition rates.
Chancellor Announces $50 Million in Scholarships to Attract and Retain Ohio's Talented Students
June 26–Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut announced on June 26 the State of Ohio's second group of collaborations to receive funding under the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program, the state's premier model for recruiting and retaining talented Ohio residents as students in STEM and STEM education fields.
Dr. Michael Schwartz Will Retire in July 2009 as President of Cleveland State University
June 23 – Ohio is grateful for President Schwartz's distinguished service to our state and the Northeast Ohio region. As a leader of Cleveland State University and President Emeritus of Kent State University, President Schwartz brought new vision and programs to both universities.
University System of Ohio Colleges Sign Accountability Agreement
June 11–State higher education officials signed an agreement on June 11 announcing that Ohio's 13 public universities and one freestanding medical college all intend to join the Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA), a national program that allows the public to review information on each university's performance on a wide range of measures, and to compare that data to other schools across the country.
Cincinnati Scientist Jeffery Molkentin Named Howard Hughes Institute Investigator
May 27– Jeffery Molkentin, a scientist and professor at the UC College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, has been named one of 56 new Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators.

Fingerhut presented a 10-year strategic plan for higher education to Governor Ted Strickland and the Ohio General Assembly that details strategies to meet the governor's goal of enrolling 230,000 more students while keeping more graduates in Ohio and attracting more talent to the state.
