State Grant and Scholarship Updates
Updated: August 31, 2009
The state of Ohio's budget has been finalized, and details regarding the state's financial aid programs are available.
Ohio War Orphans Scholarship
For the 2009-2010 academic year, the amount of the War Orphans Scholarship is:
- Public Universities and Community Colleges: 80 percent of tuition/general fees
- Independent (non-profit) and proprietary (for-profit): $4,400 (annual award)
The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Board met July 9 to approve new applicants for the 2009-2010 academic year. Additionally, the board members discussed the level of funding for the new academic year which is 5.5 percent less than the funding for the last academic year. Once again, the board was forced to make a difficult but necessary decision to reduce the value of individual awards in order to live within the financial means of the programs for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Students must attend full-time, and prior recipients must meet appropriate cumulative GPA requirements (minimum 2.00).
Ohio Academic Scholarship
For the 2009-2010 academic year, no further applications are being accepted. The amount of the Ohio Academic Scholarship for current scholars who started in the program on or before the 2008-09 school year is $2,000 for all institutions.
Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG)
Ohio residents in a degree or nurse diploma program with an Expected Family Contribution of 2190 or less and a maximum household income of $75,000.
2009-2010 Award Chart
Please note that many students likely received financial aid awards from their respective colleges and universities containing higher estimates of OCOG eligibility. These were simply estimates provided by the schools in good faith after consultation with the Ohio Board of Regents several months ago. In light of decreased funding for the OCOG program as a whole contained in the final version of the budget, final OCOG award amounts were reduced accordingly. These final award amounts are reflected in the chart below.

(official award tables will be created and approved as part of administrative code)
- These maximum award amounts should be considered a guide to potential OCOG eligibility and are subject to final determination made by institutional financial aid offices. Reasons for reduced OCOG eligibility include, but are not limited to, failure to meet institutional standards of academic progress and a lower tuition/fees structure under the statutory Pell-first concept of OCOG.
- All amounts reflect annual awards. Appropriate annual award amount should be divided by two for semesters or three for quarters.
- Eligible students continuously enrolled may receive an additional 1/2 or 1/3 of their respective award amount in their third semester or fourth quarter.
- Students are limited to 10 semesters or 15 quarters of state, need-based grant aid (including combination of OCOG and OIG).
Ohio Student Choice Grant
Funding for the Ohio Student Choice grant has been eliminated beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year. No grants will be awarded to new or prior recipients.
Regents Graduate Fellowship
For the 2009-2010 academic year, no further applications are being accepted. The amount of the Regents Graduate Fellowship for current fellows who started in the program during the 2008-09 school year is $3,200 for all institutions.
