Ohio Governor Ted Strickland signed an executive order establishing The Ohio GI Promise, which changes Ohio's residence requirements to allow all veterans of the U.S. Armed Services, their spouses, and dependents who choose to attend Ohio colleges and universities to do so at in-state tuition rates.
Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut announced on June 26 the State of Ohio's second group of collaborations to receive funding under the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program, the state's premier model for recruiting and retaining talented Ohio residents as students in STEM and STEM education fields.
Ohio is grateful for President Schwartz's distinguished service to our state and the Northeast Ohio region. As a leader of Cleveland State University and President Emeritus of Kent State University, President Schwartz brought new vision and programs to both universities.
The Ohio Board of Regents thanks him for his leadership and commitment to Cleveland State students and the community, as well as for his service on the Northeast Ohio universities study commission, which recommended a partnership between Cleveland State and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), that will expand NEOUCOM's medical presence to the Greater Cleveland area. President Schwartz's stewardship for the past seven years has made Cleveland State University a better place to learn.
As the university's board of trustees begins a nationwide search for his replacement, we are grateful President Schwartz will remain at the helm for the next year, and look forward to his announced return to the University System of Ohio as a professor after taking a well-deserved sabbatical.
Thank you, President Schwartz.
State higher education officials signed an agreement on June 11 announcing that Ohio's 13 public universities and one freestanding medical college all intend to join the Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA), a national program that allows the public to review information on each university's performance on a wide range of measures, and to compare that data to other schools across the country. The program is jointly sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the National Association of State University and Land-Grant Colleges. While a handful of Ohio's individual institutions are current VSA participants, the state of Ohio is one of the first in the U.S. to have all its public universities participate in the program as a system.

Nancy Rogers
Congratulations to Nancy H. Rogers on being named Ohio's interim Attorney General. This gubernatorial appointment is a testament to both Attorney General Rogers' strong leadership qualities and widely respected legal skills, as well as to The Ohio State University, where Attorney General Rogers is dean of OSU's Moritz College of Law.
It is fitting that Ohio's new leader—its Peoples' Lawyer—takes the helm after leading the Moritz College of Law, which 2008 U.S. News and World Report ranks as one of the top public law schools in America, and whose specialty program in dispute resolution is ranked fifth in the nation. Attorney General Rogers will return to the college in November after fulfilling Governor Strickland's appointment. I salute Attorney General Rogers for her extraordinary commitment to serve the public, and I thank The Ohio State University and our university system for cultivating and producing higher education leaders that directly affect the well-being of all Ohioans.
Jeffery Molkentin, a scientist and professor at the UC College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, has been named one of 56 new Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators. Molkentin was among 1,070 scientists who applied for the appointment. In making its selections, HHMI sought outstanding scientists studying biomedical problems. | Read Article
